About This Plant

Fairy Castle Cactus (Acanthocereus tetragonus ‘Fairy Castle’) is a dwarf cultivar of a columnar cactus native to the tropical and subtropical Americas. It is a very slow grower, which means it stays tidy on a sunny windowsill for years without outgrowing its space.

The castle-like silhouette is architectural and distinctive. The dense cluster of short, multi-branched columns grows in a way that looks deliberately sculpted. Each stem is five-ribbed with fine golden-white spines that catch the light. It suits a sunny desk, a shelf near a bright window, or a windowsill display.

The plant is not toxic but the spines are sharp. True cacti in the Cactaceae family are not on the ASPCA toxic plant list. The plant material itself poses no chemical risk if ingested. However, the spines cause physical injury and can embed in paws, mouths, and skin.

It thrives on neglect and handles the dry winter air perfectly. This cactus comes from arid tropical regions and evolved to survive months without water. The dry forced-air heating in Canadian homes from November onward does not stress it at all.
