About This Plant

Aglaonema Red Valentine is a cultivar of Aglaonema, native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia. It produces large, oval, glossy leaves with a dramatic colour scheme: deep red to hot pink colouring that floods the centre and midrib of each leaf, fading outward through pink to the dark green edges.

The deep red centre is one of the boldest colours in any low-maintenance houseplant. Most red-coloured houseplants are difficult to keep. The Red Valentine delivers vivid red and pink tones in a plant that handles lower light, drier air, and irregular watering better than almost any other colourful tropical.

Keep it away from pets and children. The ASPCA confirms Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen) is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates that cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a shelf or surface out of reach of pets and small children.

It needs more light than green Aglaonemas to hold the red colour. The red pigmentation in this cultivar is brightest in good indirect light. In low light the red fades to pink, then to a muddy pinkish-green, and in very low light the leaves come in mostly green. A north-facing window is not enough for this variety. It needs at least medium bright indirect light from an east-facing window to keep the vivid red colour.

Winter Slowdown

Growth slows from November onward and the red colour may become less vivid as Canadian light levels drop. Keep it in your brightest east-facing window rather than a darker spot.
