Chinese Evergreen Red Valentine

The Aglaonema, or Chinese Evergreen, has been cultivated as a bringer of luck and prosperity in Asia for centuries. The Red Valentine variety is a modern favorite, prized for its unique variegation pattern where no two leaves are exactly alike. In the wild, these plants grow on the forest floors of Southeast Asia, shaded by the jungle canopy. This ancestry is why they are so well-adapted to the indirect light of our modern homes.

The Red Valentine is famously easy to care for, but a few simple tips will keep those red colors popping:

• Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect light. While it can tolerate low light, the red variegation will be most intense when it receives plenty of filtered light. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can burn the leaves.
• Water: Allow the top 50% of the soil to dry out between waterings. Aglaonemas are sensitive to overwatering, so when in doubt, it is better to wait a day or two.
• Humidity: Adapts well to average home humidity but will grow faster and look glossier if you mist it occasionally or use a pebble tray.
• Soil: Use a well-draining, general-purpose potting mix.
• Temperature: Keep it in a warm spot (18°C–27°C). It is sensitive to cold, so keep it away from drafty doors and windows during the winter.
• Feeding: Use a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half-strength once a month during the spring and summer.

Chinese Evergreens are generally pest-resistant, but keep an eye out for these common issues if the plant is stressed:
