Common Questions
How often should I water the Aglaonema Red Valentine?
Water when the top half of the soil feels dry. In spring and summer roughly every seven to ten days. In a Canadian winter, every ten to fourteen days. Aglaonemas tolerate being slightly underwatered and recover quickly. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check correctly.
Why is the red colour fading?
Fading red means the plant needs more light. The red pigmentation requires at least medium bright indirect light from an east-facing window to stay vivid. In lower light the red fades to pink then to muddy green. Move it closer to a bright window. Read our guide to light requirements for indoor plants for more.
Is the Aglaonema Red Valentine toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Aglaonema spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalates that cause mouth pain, drooling, swelling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it on a shelf that pets and small children cannot reach.
How much light does it need compared to other Aglaonemas?
More than the silver and green varieties. Red and pink pigmented Aglaonemas need medium to bright indirect light to hold their colour. A north-facing window is not enough. An east-facing window or a bright spot in an east- or south-facing room works best. In lower light the colour fades significantly by spring.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes. Keep it above 15°C, in your brightest east-facing window, and reduce watering. The red colour may be slightly less vivid in the short days of November through February but the plant stays healthy. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.
