Common Questions
How often should I water the Ficus Benjamina Neon?
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, every seven to ten days in spring and summer and every ten to fourteen days in a Canadian winter. Water evenly around the root ball. Inconsistent watering triggers leaf drop. Our indoor plant watering guide shows how to check correctly.
Why is it dropping all its leaves?
Leaf drop is the Neon Benjamina responding to being moved, a cold draft, a temperature drop below 18 degrees C, or inconsistent watering. The most important rule is do not move it again in response. Leave it in its permanent bright spot and keep watering consistently. New leaves will grow back within a few weeks.
Is the Ficus Benjamina Neon toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Ficus spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. The latex sap causes oral irritation, drooling, and vomiting. Skin contact can cause dermatitis. Keep out of reach of pets and small children. Wear gloves when pruning.
How is it different from the regular Ficus Benjamina?
The Neon has vivid lime-green to chartreuse leaves that are significantly brighter and warmer than the standard Benjamina. Both have the same weeping canopy form and the same leaf-drop sensitivity. The Neon suits bright rooms where a lighter, more luminous canopy is preferred. The care is identical.
Will it survive a Canadian winter indoors?
Yes, if kept stable. Keep above 18 degrees C, in your brightest window, and do not move it. The lime-green colour may be slightly less vivid through the darkest months but the plant stays healthy. Read our tips on keeping plants alive in winter for more.
