About This Plant

Homalomena Camouflage is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It produces broad, glossy, heart-shaped leaves in a rich mottled pattern of multiple green tones, Each leaf is large and has a high-gloss surface that catches light.

The multi-green camouflage on glossy leaves reads boldly. This adds a reflective quality that makes the pattern look unique at different angles and in different light conditions. Each leaf is large enough that the mottling reads clearly from a distance.

Keep it away from pets and children. The ASPCA confirms Homalomena spp. is toxic to cats and dogs. Like other aroids, the leaves contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause oral burning, drooling, and vomiting if chewed. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.

It handles lower light and grows faster than most large-leaf aroids. Homalomena is well regarded for handling low to medium indirect light without the leaf-drop drama of Ficus. It also grows faster than many comparable statement plants, adding new leaves regularly through the growing season.

Common Questions

Why are the large leaves yellowing at the base?

Lower leaf yellowing on Homalomena is most commonly caused by overwatering. The large root system rots quickly in waterlogged soil. Let the top inch dry out between waterings and ensure excellent drainage. If multiple leaves are yellowing rapidly, check the roots for rot at the next watering.

How is it different from Dieffenbachia?

Homalomena and Dieffenbachia both belong to the aroid family and can look similar in pattern. Homalomena leaves tend to be glossier, more heart-shaped at the base, and the plant is generally faster-growing and more tolerant of lower light. Homalomena also tends to stay more upright without the leggy lower-stem exposure that Dieffenbachia develops over time.

Water: When top inch is dry

Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Every seven to ten days in spring and summer, every ten to fourteen days in Canadian winter. The large root system rots quickly in waterlogged soil. Never leave in standing water.

Humidity: Moderate

Handles average Canadian indoor humidity reasonably well due to its glossy leaf surface. A pebble tray nearby helps from November to March. No full humidifier required.
