Common Questions
What makes the veining on the leaves look embossed or raised?
The prominent veining of Hoya Crassipetiolata is caused by the vein structure sitting slightly above the leaf surface rather than being flush with it, combined with the pale green or silver-green colour of the veins against the slightly darker base. Together these create the impression of raised, textured veining that looks almost hand-embossed on each leaf. The effect is most visible when light hits the leaf from the side.
Why is it growing so slowly?
Slow growth is normal for Hoya Crassipetiolata and is a characteristic of this collector variety. The veined variegation means sections of the leaf have less chlorophyll, which reduces the plant's overall energy production and growth pace. This is not a problem. A new leaf every four to six weeks during the growing season is normal and healthy for this variety.
Is Hoya Crassipetiolata safe for cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Safe for homes with pets and small children.
Will it flower?
Yes, given enough time and bright light. Hoya Crassipetiolata produces clusters of waxy flowers like other Hoyas once the vine is mature and established. The flowers emerge from peduncles on older stem sections. Keep the plant in the brightest indirect light available and never cut old flower stalks, which are the permanent reblooming points.
Can I propagate it from cuttings?
Yes. Take a stem cutting with at least one node and one or two leaves. Allow the cut end to callous for an hour, then place in moist sphagnum moss or perlite in a warm, bright spot. Hoya cuttings root more slowly than many common houseplants due to their waxy stem surface. Expect rooting in four to eight weeks. Avoid placing cuttings in direct sun while rooting.
