About This Plant

Hoya Crassipetiolata is native to the Philippines and surrounding Southeast Asian islands. It produces thick, waxy, oval leaves. It grows as a slow, trailing or vining plant.

The veining gives the leaves an embossed, three-dimensional texture. Most Hoyas have smooth, flat, waxy leaves. Crassipetiolata has visible raised veining that creates a subtle but distinct texture across the leaf surface.

Safe for cats and dogs. The ASPCA confirms Hoya spp. is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Hoya Crassipetiolata is pet-safe. The Hoya Australis is a faster-growing, more readily blooming Hoya with plain deep green leaves for comparison.

Suits small spaces and collection building. Hoya Crassipetiolata grows slowly, which means it stays manageable on a shelf or in a small hanging basket for longer than more vigorous Hoyas.

What makes the veining on the leaves look embossed or raised?

The prominent veining of Hoya Crassipetiolata is caused by the vein structure sitting slightly above the leaf surface rather than being flush with it, combined with the pale green or silver-green colour of the veins against the slightly darker base. Together these create the impression of raised, textured veining that looks almost hand-embossed on each leaf. The effect is most visible when light hits the leaf from the side.

Why is it growing so slowly?

Slow growth is normal for Hoya Crassipetiolata and is a characteristic of this collector variety. The veined variegation means sections of the leaf have less chlorophyll, which reduces the plant's overall energy production and growth pace. This is not a problem. A new leaf every four to six weeks during the growing season is normal and healthy for this variety.
