About This Plant

The Jade Necklace is a small succulent from South Africa with thick grey-green leaves stacked so tightly up each stem that the stem is hidden. Those fleshy leaves store water, so a dry furnace-heated room and a missed watering suit it, as long as it sits in a bright window.

Dry furnace air suits it. Forced-air heating dries out Ontario and Quebec homes all winter, and this plant prefers dry air, so you don't need a humidifier. Its thick leaves hold water, so a busy week without watering won't hurt it. It is a cousin of the classic jade plant and follows the same let-it-dry routine.

Keep it away from pets. The ASPCA lists its close relative, the common jade plant, as toxic to cats and dogs. The jade necklace itself isn't listed, so treat it as toxic and place it on a high shelf or in a room your pets can't get into.

It fits a narrow windowsill. It grows slowly and takes 5 to 10 years to reach full size, so it suits a small apartment window ledge for a long time. As the stems get longer they lean and spill over the pot edge, and the leaf edges turn red in bright light. If you want long strands for a hanging pot, string of pearls trails much further.

Winter Slowdown: Rests bright and dry

From late fall to early spring, growth slows to almost nothing. Short, dull Canadian winter days give it less light, so it rests while the leaves stay firm and green.

Do not water it on a summer schedule. Water sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry and the leaves start to wrinkle, cut back on feeding, and keep it in your brightest window above 12°C (54°F), away from cold drafts by the door.

In spring, go back to regular watering whenever the soil dries, and feed monthly until fall. Mature plants can make tiny white to pink star-shaped flowers at the stem tips, though blooms are rare indoors.

Other Plants You Might Like

Not sure this is the right fit? Here are three other plants our Canadian customers love. All ship across Canada and thrive in Canadian homes.

String of Turtles. Small and trailing.

If you like a small plant with tiny leaves that spill over the pot edge, the string of turtles with its patterned round leaves fits the same narrow shelf.

Ponytail Palm. Pet-friendly pick.

For a home with cats or dogs, the ponytail palm, listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs, also likes bright light and dry soil between waterings.

String of Hearts. Long, easy trails.

If you want a trailing plant for a hanging pot, the string of hearts with its long vines of small heart-shaped leaves also lets its soil dry out between waterings.

Common Questions

What is a jade necklace plant?

It is Crassula rupestris subsp. marnieriana, often sold as Crassula marnieriana, a small succulent from South Africa. Its fleshy, rounded leaves grow in pairs stacked so tightly that they hide the stem, which gives it the necklace look.

How big does a jade necklace plant get?

Indoors it usually stays small, around 15 to 20 cm tall, with stems that spread and spill over the pot edge. In ideal conditions it can reach up to 50 cm tall and wide, but that takes 5 to 10 years.

What soil does a jade necklace need?

Use a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix, or add perlite and grit to regular potting soil. Our guide to the best soil for succulents covers what to buy, and the pot must have a drainage hole.

How often should I water a jade necklace?

Water when the soil is completely dry, then let the extra water drain out and never leave the pot sitting in water. During the heating season in Ontario and Quebec, water even less, since soggy soil in winter leads to stem rot. Wrinkled leaves are the sign it needs a drink.

Why are the leaves on my jade necklace turning red?

Red leaf edges are a normal response to bright light or mild stress, such as a sunny window or a dry spell. The colour is temporary and fades if the plant gets a little less sun.

Is the jade necklace toxic to cats and dogs?

Treat it as toxic. The ASPCA does not list the jade necklace, but it lists its close relative, the common jade plant, as toxic to cats and dogs, with vomiting, depression and loss of coordination as the signs. Keep it on a high shelf or in a room your pets and small children can't get into.

>
Why has my jade necklace stopped growing in winter?

Growth slows in winter because of short, dull Canadian days, and it picks up again in spring. Keep it in your brightest window, water only when the soil is fully dry, and keep it above 12°C (54°F), since frost kills it.

What pests or safety issues should I know about?

Pests tend to build up in winter, when the plant spends months indoors with the furnace running and the windows shut.

Mealybugs

Looks like: white cottony clumps tucked between the stacked leaves.

Fix: Dab each clump with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol.

Aphids

Looks like: clusters of tiny green or black insects on new growth.

Fix: Wipe them off with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, or use an insecticidal soap labelled for houseplants.

Vine weevil

Looks like: cream C-shaped grubs in the soil and a plant that wilts for no clear reason.

Fix: Remove the plant, pick the grubs off the roots, and repot it in fresh cactus mix.

Keep any plant with pests away from your other plants until it is clean, and wear gloves when you handle it.

Good to Know

Sun: Bright light with some direct sun

A south- or west-facing window gives it enough light in a Canadian home. In a dim north window the stems stretch and turn spindly, so check your spot with our guide to plant light needs.

Light: South or west window

Give it a few hours of direct sun a day, ideally morning or late afternoon sun. In July and August, move it back a little from a hot south window at midday, since strong midday sun can scorch the leaves.

Water: Only when the soil is completely dry

Water deeply, let it drain, then wait until the soil is completely dry before the next drink. From November to March, when the furnace is running, water sparingly and never let the pot sit in water.

Humidity: Dry air is fine

It prefers dry air, so the forced-air heating in an Ontario or Quebec winter suits it without a humidifier. Keep it away from steamy bathrooms and other damp spots.

Pet Friendly: Not confirmed, keep out of reach

The ASPCA has not listed this plant, but it lists its close relative, the jade plant, as toxic, so treat it as toxic and keep it on a high shelf or in a room your cats and dogs can't get into.

Pro Tip

If a stem breaks off while you move or clean the plant, let the piece dry for a few days, then lay it on dry cactus mix. It roots best in spring or summer, and our step-by-step repotting guide shows how to move it into its own pot once roots form.
